Why 85 exists at altitude
At high elevation the air is thinner, so older, naturally-aspirated engines were less prone to knock and could safely run a lower-octane fuel. That's why some western, high-altitude states historically sold 85 octane as their cheapest grade — it was effectively 'regular' for the conditions and the cars of the era.
Is it safe in a modern car?
For many older naturally-aspirated engines at altitude, 85 is fine. But modern engines are often tuned assuming at least 87, and they compensate with knock sensors and forced induction rather than relying on thin air. Many automakers now advise using at least the octane your manual specifies regardless of altitude.
The safe move: follow your owner's manual's minimum octane. If it says 87, choosing 87 (often the midgrade at these stations) over 85 is cheap insurance, even in the mountains.
The turbo exception
Turbocharged / forced-induction engines don't get the altitude break. The turbo restores sea-level-like pressure in the intake, so the knock risk is there at any elevation. If you drive a turbo (including many EcoBoost and modern small-turbo engines), use the octane your manual requires — not 85 — even at 7,000 feet.
