Is premium gas worth it? The honest cost-benefit

It comes down to one question your owner's manual answers: is premium required or just recommended?

If premium is REQUIRED

Use it. These engines — often turbocharged or high-compression — are tuned for higher-octane fuel; running regular can cause knock and, over time, reduced performance or engine strain. The extra cost is part of owning the car.

If premium is only RECOMMENDED

Most "recommended premium" engines run safely on regular — the computer pulls timing to prevent knock — with a small drop in power and MPG (studies generally find a few percent). Whether premium pays for itself comes down to the price gap.

The simple math

Premium usually runs 50-70¢ more per gallon. On a 14-gallon fill, a 60¢ upcharge is about $8.40 per tank — roughly $250 a year over ~30 fills. If your engine only recommends premium, that's $250 for a few percent, often not worth it. If it requires premium, it isn't optional.
