Octane Explained: What 87, 89, 91 and 93 Actually Mean

Octane measures resistance to knock — not cleanliness, not power, not quality. Here's the plain version.

Octane = resistance to knocking

Octane rating measures how much compression a fuel can take before it ignites on its own — i.e., its resistance to knock (pre-ignition/detonation). A higher number means the fuel is harder to ignite under pressure, not that it has more energy or burns cleaner.

The number on the U.S. pump (87, 89, 91, 93) is the AKI — the average of two lab methods, (R+M)/2. That's why other countries quote higher-looking RON numbers for the same fuel; a U.S. 91 AKI is roughly a 95–96 RON. Same gas, different scale.

Higher octane does NOT add power or MPG — unless your engine needs it

All grades carry about the same energy per gallon. If your engine is designed for regular, premium won't add horsepower or meaningfully improve your mileage — you're just buying knock resistance you don't use.

The exception is an engine built for high octane (high-compression or turbocharged). Those engines can advance timing and run more boost on premium, which is where the extra octane turns into real performance — because the engine was tuned to expect it.

Is higher octane gas better for my car?

Only if your engine requires or is tuned for it. For a regular-fuel engine, higher octane gives no extra power or mileage — it's just more knock resistance you don't need.

Why is octane a higher number in Europe?

Europe quotes RON; the U.S. quotes AKI, the average of RON and MON. The fuel is similar — the scale is different, so a U.S. 91 is about a 95–96 RON.
