First, rule out the easy stuff
Before suspecting the engine, check the things that swing MPG the most for free:
- Tire pressure — low tires add rolling resistance; check when cold against the door-jamb spec.
- Driving & conditions — winter blends, cold engines, short trips, headwinds, roof racks and extra weight all cut MPG. A cold-weather dip is normal.
- How you measure — one tank means little. Air pockets, a different pump shutoff, terrain and traffic all skew a single fill. Average several tanks.
Then the common maintenance causes
- Dirty air filter — cheap to check; a badly clogged one hurts efficiency.
- Worn spark plugs — misfires and weak spark waste fuel.
- A failing O2 sensor — can make the engine run rich and tank your MPG; often throws a check-engine code.
- Dirty MAF sensor — confuses the fuel mixture; can reduce economy.
- Clogged fuel filter / dirty injectors — restrict or mis-spray fuel.
- Stuck thermostat (engine running cold) — the computer over-fuels a cold engine.
Then the bigger ones
If the basics check out, look at brakes dragging, a failing fuel pump, low compression, or transmission issues. These are rarer and pricier — which is exactly why you work the cheap, common causes first.
Pull any check-engine codes (a cheap OBD2 reader or a free parts-store scan) — a stored code often points straight at the culprit (O2, MAF, misfire).
