When shutting off beats idling
An idling engine burns fuel to go nowhere. The old 'it takes more to restart than to idle' rule is outdated for modern fuel-injected cars: restarting uses only a brief burst of fuel. As a rule of thumb, if you'll be stopped more than roughly 10–30 seconds (and it's safe), shutting off saves fuel.
Long warm-ups are the bigger waste — modern engines warm up faster while gently driving than sitting in the driveway.
Does restarting wear out the starter?
On a normal car, occasional shut-offs at long stops won't meaningfully wear the starter or battery — the savings outweigh it. The concern is more real if you'd be cycling constantly, which is exactly why factory auto start-stop systems exist: they're engineered for it.
Is auto start-stop bad for the engine?
Cars with factory start-stop use a heavy-duty starter, a battery built for the cycling, and oil/bearing designs that tolerate frequent restarts. It's designed to save fuel without hurting the engine, and it does save a measurable amount in stop-and-go traffic.
Disabling it every drive mostly just spends a little more fuel. If a particular car's system feels harsh, that's a comfort preference — not evidence it's damaging the engine. (It doesn't contradict 'warm up your car' advice: warm-up is about the first cold start, not restarts once the engine is already hot.)
