1970-1974 Early 1970s Toyota Corolla / Corona — MPG & Fuel Facts NO OFFICIAL EPA RATING
The EPA's public fuel-economy dataset only goes back to 1984 — the 1970-1974 Toyota Corolla / Corona predates it, so there is no government-rated MPG number for this car anywhere, including here.
Estimated 19–35 MPG combined.
Consumer Guide's 1973 testing put the smaller Corolla at 35.3 mpg and the larger Corona at 27.7 mpg; because EPA testing didn't begin until MY1975 (by which point Toyota had already moved both nameplates to newer, larger-bodied generations), we're leaning on that period magazine test plus the following generation's EPA-rated 19-33 mpg as directional corroboration rather than a direct match for the actual early-70s cars.
The Corolla sold in the U.S. in the early 1970s was the second-generation (E20) car, a small RWD sedan/coupe/wagon with 1.2-1.6L overhead-cam fours; the contemporary Corona (T80/T100) was a notch larger and heavier with a 1.6-2.0L four, generally trading some of the Corolla's fuel economy for more interior room and power.
No EPA figure exists for these specific early-1970s generations, since EPA fuel-economy testing only began with model year 1975 - by which time both the Corolla and Corona had moved on to newer, slightly larger third-generation bodies. Consumer Guide's own 1973 fuel-economy roundup is the best period-contemporary hard number we could verify for the actual cars in question: 35.3 mpg for the Corolla, 27.7 mpg for the Corona.
As directional corroboration only (a different generation, not the same car), the EPA's first Gas Mileage Guide (MY1975) rated the next-generation Corolla at 21 city/33 highway and the next-generation Corona at 19 city/28 highway; by 1978 the small-engine Corolla variant reached 34 city/46 highway. The consistent theme across both generations and both test methodologies is that the Corolla out-economizes the Corona by a meaningful margin at every point.
