The EPA's public fuel-economy dataset only goes back to 1984 — the 1968-1976 Mercedes-Benz W114/W115 (220/230/250/280 gas; 200D/220D/240D/300D diesel) predates it, so there is no government-rated MPG number for this car anywhere, including here.

The range is wide because it spans two different worlds: EPA and owner data put the carbureted gas fours and sixes at roughly 15-19 US mpg, while the diesels run roughly 24-30 — a single number would be misleading.

The Stroke 8 line splits by engine: W115 four-cylinders (200/220/230.4 gas; 200D/220D/240D diesels, plus the 240D 3.0 five-cylinder sold in the US as the 1975-76 300D) and W114 sixes (230.6/250/280/280E). US cars were mostly automatics.

The 1976 EPA Gas Mileage Guide — whose US 240D/300D/230 rows are still this generation — shows: 240D at 23-25 city / 30-33 highway / 27 combined; 300D (3.0 five-cylinder diesel) at 22/28/24; 230 (2.3 four, automatic) at 17/20/18; and 280/280C (DOHC M110 six, automatic) at 14/19/16. These are pre-1985-method numbers, optimistic on the gas cars in particular.

Owner-forum consensus matches: PeachParts diesel threads report W115 240D figures around 30-33 mpg in gentle mixed driving and about 26 mpg for a 4-speed 220D, while a Benzworld W114 thread pegs 15-18 mpg as normal for the M110 280 six however it is driven.

In site copy, treat the variants separately: gas 230/250/280 at roughly 15-19 US mpg; diesel 200D/220D/240D/300D at roughly 24-30. The 15-30 span is the honest envelope for the whole line.
