1968-1974 AMC Javelin / AMX — MPG & Fuel Facts NO OFFICIAL EPA RATING
The EPA's public fuel-economy dataset only goes back to 1984 — the 1968-1974 AMC Javelin / AMX predates it, so there is no government-rated MPG number for this car anywhere, including here.
Estimated 11–15 MPG combined.
A Car Life road test of a 1968 Javelin SST with the 343ci V8 and 4-speed manual measured 11.6 mpg under test conditions and 11-15 mpg in normal driving; no period figure could be confirmed for the base six-cylinder or other V8/AMX variants across the full 1968-74 run, so this range reflects only the tested 343/manual configuration.
Javelin and AMX shared AMC's engine lineup across this run: a 232ci/258ci inline-six and 290ci, 304ci, 343ci, 360ci, 390ci, and (from 1971) 401ci V8s, with manual or automatic transmission.
The one figure that traces to an actual period road test is Car Life's December 1967 issue, road-testing the new 1968 Javelin SST with the 343ci/280hp V8, 4-speed manual, and 3.54:1 axle -- read directly from a scanned original, its data panel states 'Test conditions, mpg... 11.6 / Normal cond., mpg... 11-15 / Cruising range, miles... 200-275.'
Ate Up With Motor's Javelin retrospective references a June 1974 Road Test magazine piece titled 'Economy Test: Javelin 304' in its bibliography, which would be directly relevant to the smaller-V8 end of the range, but this research pass could not locate or read the actual text or figures from that article, so it is not used as a sourcing basis. A commonly repeated but unsourced online claim of '24 mpg' for a six-cylinder Javelin could not be verified and is explicitly not used here.
No EPA 'Gas Mileage Guide' figure for the 1974 Javelin/AMX (the closest model year to the EPA's MY1975 testing start) was found. Larger V8s (360, 390, 401), available from 1971, would be expected to sit at or below the 343's figures, but this is inference, not a sourced number.
