1968-1972 Chevrolet Chevelle — MPG & Fuel Facts NO OFFICIAL EPA RATING

The EPA's public fuel-economy dataset only goes back to 1984 — the 1968-1972 Chevrolet Chevelle (SS/Malibu) predates it, so there is no government-rated MPG number for this car anywhere, including here.

Estimated 7–15 MPG combined.

No independently verified period magazine MPG figure could be confirmed for the Chevelle; the range instead reflects an enthusiast site's claim (attributed to unnamed 'contemporary road tests') of 7-10 mpg for 454 LS6 cars, widened upward using modern Fuelly owner-logged averages of roughly 9-11 mpg combined to account for milder small-block variants.

This is our estimate, not an EPA rating — built from the period road tests, marque-specialist guides and corroborated owner reports cited below, hedged where sources vary. Treat it as a ballpark for planning, not a spec to rely on.

The 1968-72 Chevelle SS/Malibu range spanned 307ci and 350ci small-blocks up to 396ci and 454ci big-blocks (including the high-output LS6), with manual and automatic transmissions and a wide spread of axle ratios -- all of which affect real-world economy more than any single 'Chevelle' number can capture.

Fuelcurve.com states that 'contemporary road tests' of LS6-equipped Chevelles averaged 7-10 mpg, but does not name which magazine ran the test, which is a real sourcing weakness -- it should be read as a plausible but not independently confirmed figure for the top-performance engine.

Motor Trend did road-test an SS 396 (Jan. 1969 issue) and an LS6 454 (Dec. 1969 issue), and PDF scans of both exist at over-drive-magazine.com, but this research pass could not extract readable MPG figures from those scans, so they are not used as a sourcing basis here -- flagged as a lead for follow-up research rather than a confirmed number.

Fuelly's modern owner-logged data shows small samples of 1969 Chevelles averaging 11.06 mpg combined and 1970 Chevelles averaging 9.30 mpg combined across a mix of engines -- real data, but modern driving conditions, not a period test.
