1960-1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 — MPG & Fuel Facts NO OFFICIAL EPA RATING

The EPA's public fuel-economy dataset only goes back to 1984 — the 1960-1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 predates it, so there is no government-rated MPG number for this car anywhere, including here.

Estimated 10–16 MPG combined.

No period road test or EPA figure exists for this fuel-thirsty, body-on-frame 4x4 (it was never part of the EPA's passenger-car fuel-economy testing program); a large, cross-referenced sample of owner-reported real-world mileage on IH8MUD - the FJ40's largest dedicated community - consistently converges on 10-16 mpg depending on engine, gearing, and tires.

This is our estimate, not an EPA rating — built from the period road tests, marque-specialist guides and corroborated owner reports cited below, hedged where sources vary. Treat it as a ballpark for planning, not a spec to rely on.

The FJ40 spanned two relevant engine generations: the smaller 3.9L F-series inline six (through roughly 1975) and the larger, heavier 4.2L 2F inline six (1975 onward, continuing past 1983). Multiple long-running IH8MUD threads describe the 2F specifically as thirstier than the earlier F engine, with one contributor calling it 'a gas whore.'

This vehicle was not part of the EPA's Gas Mileage Guide program during our period - it does not appear in either the 1975 or 1978 editions we reviewed page-by-page, consistent with its classification as a heavy-duty multipurpose/off-road vehicle exempt from the same passenger-car testing regime that covered Toyota's own Corolla, Corona, and Celica.

Owner consensus across at least two separate long-running IH8MUD threads (dozens of individual reports) centers on 11-13 mpg as 'typical,' with outliers as low as 3 mpg towing/off-roading and as high as 19 mpg under ideal steady highway conditions with tall gearing and a well-tuned engine. We used the commonly-cited core band rather than those extremes.
